A contribution to understand CAI of composite laminates

Presentation of the PhD disertation  “A contribution to understand CAI of composite laminates” by Yi Liv  Yi Liv has presented a disertation on the influence of the layup on the CAI strength of laminates. An experimental investigation has been carried out to validate the hypothesis that the stacking sequence is determinant in the localization of delaminations. The damage development in some specimenshas been observed using quasi-static indentation tests, C-Scan and tomography. For three laminates with a circular delamination a numerical simulation has been done in order to assess the sensitivity o compressive strength to delamination size, location and loading directions. All this has made possible to make several design recommendations for laminates.The thesis’ advisors have been Drs. Josep Costa and Emilio V. González of the Physics and EMCI departments, respectively, and has been examined by a board formed by Drs. Jorge Lopez Puente (Universidad Carlos III – Madrid), Claudio S. Lópes (IMDEA-Materiales – Madrid) and Norbert Blanco (UdG).
