Presentation of the PhD dissertation “Response of composite laminates under out-of-plane loading” by Ahmed Wagih Abdallah Abdel Hady

AMADE congratulates Ahmed Wagih Abdallah for the successful presentation of his PhD Dissertation on May 28. The main goal of the contribution is to provide a scaling tool to predict the response of composite structures under out-of-plane loading by testing small coupons. In order to do so, first the damage mechanisms in composite laminates made of different ply thicknesses were investigated. Secondly, the effect of the mismatch angle between the layers was discussed: while small angles increase the maximum load capacity, large angles can delay damage initiation. However, it is the ply thickness that has a significant effect on the damage resistance. Thirdly, a parametric study was carried out to study the effect of the different parameters on the force-indentation response. The result of this effort is a reliable scaling tool to predict the behavior of the composite structures.

The thesis has been advised by AMADE’s members Dr. Norbert Blanco and Dr. Pere Maimí, and has been presented before the panel formed by Drs. Giuseppe Catalanotti (Queen’s University, Belfast, UK), Frederic Laurin (ONERA, France) and Jordi Renart (UdG).
