Presentation of the PhD dissertation “Analysis and development of experimental characterization methodologies of mode II fracture toughness on CFRP bonded joints” by Magdalena Pérez Galmés

Once again, AMADE is happy to announce that a new PhD dissertation has been successfully presented. Magdalena Pérez, on July 27, presented her original research on the shear (mode II) fracture toughness in adhesive joints. She has used two new data reduction methods that allow to extend the applicability of delamination tests to structural adhesive testing, in a nonlinear fracture mechanics framework. Also, she has defined a new specimen test geometry to test adhesives that ensures stable propagation test results of the FPZ. After that, she has discussed the suitability of mode II fracture toughness test methods for structural adhesives. Based on this theoretical background and on the results of a test campaign using the four most common mode II test configurations, it has been possible to write a set of recommendations for the testing of the adhesives.

The thesis’ advisors have been Drs. Jordi Renart and Dr. Carlos Sarrado (UdG). The grading panel consisted of Dr. Faustino Múgica (U. País Vasco), Dr. Julien Jumel (Université de Bordeaux – France) and Dr. Albert Turon (UdG).
