Dr. Alba Codina Receives an Honorable Mention at the EMA Luis María Ortega Basagoiti 2024 Awards

Dr. Alba Codina Receives an Honorable Mention at the EMA Luis María Ortega Basagoiti 2024 Awards

Dr. Alba Codina, a researcher at the Analysis and Advanced Materials for Structural Design (AMADE) group at the University of Girona (UdG), has been awarded an Honorable Mention for her PhD thesis titled “Study of debonding in CFRP-strengthened beams and contribution of anchorage systems.” The thesis was supervised by Dr. Cristina Barris and Dr. Lluis Torres.

This recognition was granted during the Second Edition of the EMA Luis María Ortega Basagoiti Awards 2024, organized by the spanish association for the Repair, Reinforcement, and Protection of Concrete (ARPHO).

ARPHO, established in 2010, is dedicated to professionalizing the field of concrete repair, reinforcement, and protection while supporting companies engaged in these activities. The EMA (Excellence and Academic Merit) Awards Luis María Ortega Basagoiti aim to recognize students and researchers who contribute to the conservation of built structures, with a focus on concrete repair, reinforcement, and protection.

Dr. Alba Codina’s thesis investigates intermediate crack debonding (ICD) in reinforced concrete (RC) beams strengthened with externally bonded (EB) carbon fibre-reinforced polymers (CFRP). She analysed innovative anchoring methods, such as externally bonded reinforcement on grooves (EBROG) and hybrid bonding (HB-FRP), to enhance structural performance and prevent ICD.

To complement this, Alba developed a numerical model validated by experimental results, offering a predictive tool for understanding ICD failure in different strengthening techniques.

Dr. Codina is currently a postdoctoral fellow at AMADE, where her research focuses on structure reinforcement using FRP materials through experimental work and the development of analytical and numerical models. She also serves as a lecturer in the Mechanical Engineering Department at UdG.

She completed her architecture studies at UdG in 2017 and earned a Master of Science in Mechanics of Materials and Structures in 2020. The same year, she embarked on her PhD journey, which included a research stay at the Politecnico di Milano. She successfully defended her PhD thesis in July 2024.

This recognition highlights Dr. Codina’s significant contributions to the field of structural reinforcement and her ongoing commitment to advancing research and education in this domain.
