New Paper on the Ply Misaligment Effect on Notched Composite Strength

Researchers from AMADE (O. Vallmajó, M. Descamps and A. Turon) in collaboration with A. Alteiro from Porto University have published a new study in Composite Structures, titled: “Effect of ply misaligment on the notched strength of composite laminates”

This research examines how ply misalignment affects the strength of notched composite laminates. By combining low-fidelity analytical models with high-fidelity finite element simulations, the study introduces a hybrid methodology that efficiently predicts strength allowables while maintaining high accuracy.

Ply misalignment is one of the most critical manufacturing defects impacting the structural integrity and reliability of composite materials. Understanding its effect enables more precise strength predictions, reducing reliance on costly experimental campaigns and leading to more efficient design processes.

The findings contribute to the development of improved composite modeling techniques, allowing for safer and more optimized designs in aerospace, automotive, and other high-performance industries. By integrating manufacturing defects into design calculations, this research helps engineers create more reliable and cost-effective composite structures.
