Seminar on Data-Driven Design of Materials and Structures by Prof. Miguel Bessa

Seminar on Data-Driven Design of Materials and Structures by Prof. Miguel Bessa

The Master in Mechanics of Materials and Structures at the University of Girona recently hosted an inspiring seminar featuring Prof. Miguel Bessa, Associate Professor of Engineering at Brown University (USA), who holds a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from Northwestern University (2016), where he was a Fulbright scholar. Prior to his current position, he held a postdoctoral stage at Caltech and later worked at Delft University of Technology, where he progressed rapidly from Assistant to Associate Professor before joining Brown University in 2022.

The seminar, titled “Data-Driven Design and Analysis of Structures and Materials”, focused on the growing role of machine learning and data-driven approaches in modern engineering. Over the course of the session, Prof. Bessa presented cutting-edge methodologies that integrate artificial intelligence with materials science and structural engineering.

The event brought together master’s students and researchers from the University of Girona, fostering an engaging academic exchange on emerging computational approaches in engineering. Participants had the opportunity to interact directly with Prof. Bessa, discussing both fundamental concepts and advanced applications of data-driven modelling.

This seminar is part of the academic activities organized within the Master in Mechanics of Materials and Structures at the University of Girona (https://mastermms.udg.edu/), reinforcing the programme’s commitment to connecting students with leading international experts and promoting exposure to state-of-the-art research.
